We are a small rural town with approximately 1100 people with an interesting history. Mangakino village, on the shores of Lake Maraetai, was only meant to be a temporary town until the completion of a number of dams on the Waikato River - Maraetai I & II, Whakamaru, Waipapa, Atiamuri - all built by a workforce based in Mangakino. Despite the odds the town has survived and remains a close-knit community, affectionately known as “Mango”, with some excellent services including the Mangakino Library.
