Wharewaka final destination for Our Neighbourhood events

MEDIA RELEASE

22 February 2010

The last Our Neighbourhood event for the series is also the only event to be held by the Lake, and is scheduled for this Friday afternoon at Wharewaka Point starting at 5pm.

Organisers are looking forward to a great day of fun in the sun and the water for the last event of the series. Taupo District Council Strategic Relationships Manager Dylan Tahau says having the event by the lake will be fantastic, especially if it is hot. “We’ve had some beautiful weather lately, so this weekend should hopefully be massive, and it will be awesome to incorporate the water as well. It will be nice to finish off with a bang, so I hope we get lots of families along.”

The Our Neighbourhood series of events carry through the neighbourhood theme that developed during the council and community ten year plan process.  The events are designed to get neighbours together and encourage a sense of pride in our communities.

Mr Tahau says the Our Neighbourhood is not about selling or wanting anything in return. “We’ve had over a thousand locals turn up over the past few months for the events, simply to celebrate themselves.

“Even if you’ve already been to an event this year, or you don’t live near Wharewaka, come down anyway and join the fun, and meet someone new. I think a place like Wharewaka Point is pretty special to all of us, and will be a great place to finish off the events for this series. See you there, this Friday at 5pm,” said Mr Tahau.

Events in this series have been held at Pihanga Reserve, Blue Reserve in Wairakei, Mere Rd Reserve, Parkdale Reserve, Lakewood Park and Taupahi Reserve in Turangi.

If you feel your neighbourhood has missed out on receiving an Our Neighbourhood event, let us know why the team should visit your neighbourhood next time. You can contact the team by emailing ourneighbourhood@taupo.govt.nz .
