Whakamaru speed limit to change

MEDIA RELEASE

11 December 2009

On Tuesday Council agreed to amend the speed limit along a length of road in Whakamaru.

After consultation with local residents, the speed limit along Pokuru Road North from State Highway 30 to Kaahu Road, and along Kaahu Road from Pokuru Road North to 200m south of the school entrance will be reduced from 100 km/hour to 70 km/hour from 21st December 2009.

Councillor Ailsa Gathergood acknowledges the changes that have occurred in the area over the last few years. “We have holiday homes in the Whakamaru Village instead of Hydro workers, and land use changes like the Serenity Cove development, which will mean more traffic on the affected roads. These slower speed limits will improve the level of safety for all.”

Council has agreed to the change in order to promote road safety around the school and the recreation reserves in time for the arrival the summer's holidaymakers.
