Taupo’s turn for Dogs R Fun day

MEDIA RELEASE

20 January 2010

Taupo District Council are holding a Dogs R Fun day this Saturday 23 January on the Tongariro North Domain, and are hoping Taupo can turn it on as well as Turangi did on Saturday.

Dog owners in Taupo are encouraged to head down to the North Domain at 10:30am, where the Taupo District Council Animal Management team, in association with More FM and Purina, will be putting on a day of fun events for dogs and their owners.  Entry is $5 with all proceeds going towards the Royal NZ Foundation for the Blind’s Guide Dog programme.  Council ask that all dogs are well behaved and are kept on a lead at all times.

Activities include a parade around the town, obedience displays by the Taupo Canine Obedience Club, and competitions including ‘waggiest’ tail, biggest dribble, egg and spoon races, and best dog/owner look-alike, with prizes thanks to Purina.  A sausage sizzle and cold drinks will also be available.

The Turangi event was held in conjunction with the Our Neighbourhoods community event, and was a great success with a large turnout of people and dogs with everyone joining in all of the activities. “The walk around the town centre was a sight to see with this great line of people with their dogs on leads. There were all shapes and sizes,” said Ms Hewitt.

“We were met on the outskirts of the town centre by the Town Crier, he was really dressed for the part!  Taupahi Rd was lined with cars both sides as people came along to join in the fun. The weather was just right, warm with a nice lot of cloud cover to keep it from getting too hot.  Here's hoping we can get the same this Saturday in Taupo.”
