Taupo culture not lost on new TDC staff

MEDIA RELEASE

30 July 2009

In conjunction with Maori Language Week a group of new Taupo District Council officers travelled around the district on Wednesday as part of an induction process.

The tour is offered annually as a regular part of Council activities and helps staff, especially those new to the area, gain an appreciation of the enormity of the Taupo District as well as the cultural significance of the area.

Strategic Relationships Manager Dylan Tahau, who hosts the tours each year, says it is a chance for new team members to see some of the Council’s facilities but also to gain an appreciation for special places unique to Taupo District. “Our district has a rich history and the tour is a great opportunity to showcase some of the meaning and heritage behind our Maori place names, it is great to be able to share some of the history with fellow staff.”

This year the tour was done as a part of Maori Language week celebrations, with particular importance placed on the cultural heritage the district offers. As well as viewing Council property and plant, the team learned about some of the most beautiful and significant areas for Maori. Particular importance was given to Motutaiko Island and its preservation by local hapu as staff drove past the sacred spot via SH1.

The tour started in Taupo, heading south through Turangi, before returning via Western Bays and Mangakino. Amongst the stops were the new Turangi wastewater treatment plant, and both the Turangi and Mangakino council offices. The tour finished with a tour of Mangakino and the history behind the town, before passing through Mokai and the Tuaropaki operations.

Later this week a group of Council staff will be visiting Waipahihi Marae, gaining an insight into some of its history, protocols and some of its families as an integral part of the Taupo community.
