New Waikato River bridge takes shape
MEDIA RELEASE
19 February 2010
The new bridge being built over the Waikato River as part of the 16km East Taupo Arterial took another step towards its final form on Tuesday [16 February 2010].
Ron Boyle, Taupo District ETA Project Manager said “the process of building the Waikato River bridge is a complex engineering exercise and the Fulton Hogan team involved are doing a fantastic job.”
He said two large cranes, positioned on each side of the river, lifted the 50 tonne arch into place while two smaller cranes were used to provide access for the work crews. “There is no margin for error and precision was required to ensure the last section of the bridge’s arch structure slotted perfectly into place.”
Andrew McRae Fulton Hogan Project Manager said crews worked late into the night to ensure the bridge arch was securely in place before the river was reopened to all users the following morning.
“This was a delicate and lengthy operation. Our crew members were working at height over a fast flowing river, however, like the previous launch of the bottom chord across the river, meticulous planning ensured a safe and successful result.”
The next phase of the bridge construction is underway with the placement of 72 hangers which will support the bridge deck from the arch structure.
