Management of six Taupo sportsgrounds under review

MEDIA RELEASE

10 March 2010

The management of six of Taupo Town’s most actively used outdoor sportsgrounds is currently up for discussion, and Council wants all those who use these facilities to have their say.

The draft Sportsgrounds Reserve Management Plan proposes changes and improvements to the way six Taupo district sportsgrounds and reserves are used, maintained, developed, and protected in the future. The plan looks at Centennial Park, Crown Park, Hickling Park, Kaimanawa Reserve, Owen Delany Park, and Waipahihi Reserve.

The plan includes the development and improvement of some of the facilities available. Some changes will have cost implications for ratepayers, and some may see sports disciplines needing to be relocated in the future.

Councillor Kathryn Uvhagen, Chairman of the TKMP Committee, urges all sports clubs and teams to have a look at the plan. “The proposed ideas are very good, and are designed to make sure that Taupo will have the best facilities available to suit all sports interests.  Most of us use these sportsgrounds at some time so it is important that as many as possible let us know their preferences and what is important for sportsground users. We want all parties to be fairly represented.”

Consultation has already taken place with around 35 sportsclubs and other organisations in the initial stages of the plan. Reserve neighbours and other affected parties should also be involved in ongoing consultation along with the general public.

Anyone wishing to view a copy of the plan can do so at any Taupo District Council office or library, at the AC Baths and Taupo Events Centre, or on our website here. Brochures are also available to take away which outline the proposed changes for each of the six sportsgrounds and reserves.
