Hilltop School wins Paper 4 Trees competition

Hilltop School have shown their support for the environment by joining the national ‘Paper 4 Trees’ campaign, and won a recent competition for their efforts.

Paper 4 Trees is a carbon zero programme which sees schools and local councils recycling paper in exchange for native trees. For every 2 cubic metres of paper recycled the school is sent one native tree, which is in-turn planted by the school.  They held a national competition last term looking for the best photo of schools recycling and planting trees. 

Hilltop school sent in photos of the students recycling paper, and planting the native trees they had received, winning a $100 book voucher. 

Hilltop School Teacher Helen Gibson is extremely proud of her pupils. “These children have taken up the challenge and are really getting behind it. They enjoy recycling and it’s great they are receiving a message about protecting the environment.” 

Taupo District Council Asset Manager Brent Aitken says it is a great effort, and a very worthy cause. “We’ve [TDC] been a part of the scheme for two years now, and in that time have saved a lot of paper from unnecessarily ending up in landfills.”
