Dogs had their day on domain

MEDIA RELEASE

26 January 2010

More than 50 dogs, and many more owners turned out on Saturday to the Taupo Dogs R Fun day on the Tongariro North Domain, having fun despite the weather.

Organisers were happy with the turnout of people.  “It was a little damp on the day but still had a good turnout of people and dogs,” says Senior Animal Management Compliance Officer Cherry Hewitt.

There was an egg and spoon race for owners and dogs, and an egg throwing competition. “You wouldn't believe how far a raw egg can bounce on wet ground,” says Ms Hewitt.

“The competitions were a lot of fun for owners and dogs,” says Ms Hewitt.  Wendy Isaacs from the Royal NZ Foundation for the Blind was the judge for the dog/owner look alike contest, and the loudest bark. “It was really interesting to see how many people actually look like their dogs. I am sure every dog went away with a prize.”

The biggest winner of the day was the Guide Dog Services, with $1533.50 raised for the training of guide dogs to help the blind.  “Thanks also to our sponsors, Purina and More FM for making the day happen.
