Clr “Smiley” happy to be Council champion for cycling and walking

Councillor Bernhard Chrustowski, a long time dedicated cyclist, has accepted the job of being the champion for walking and cycling in the Taupo District.

Submissions being heard by Council have highlighted a need to provide a champion within Council for walking and cycling and outdoor pursuits in the Taupo District and Councillor Bernhard Chrustowski has been nominated by his peers to take up this role.

Mayor Rick Cooper says the Council is very committed to promoting safer walking and cycling in the district and, finances permitting, will look to progress work on making cycling and walking more accessible and safer. “We want to ensure both locals and visitors to the district are able to experience the pure enjoyment afforded by our many wonderful walking and cycling tracks in a safe and enjoyable manner.”

Councillor Chrustowski, a long time dedicated cyclist and walker, says his fellow councillors know that he is very passionate about the outdoors and particularly walking and cycling.  “I believe we have some of the best tracks in the country here in Taupo and I encourage everyone to get out and have a go.  For my part I will also be advocating strongly on behalf of the walking and cycling fraternity.”

He says he will be working alongside Transportation Team Leader Claire Sharland to ensure the district’s roads are safer for cyclists and pedestrians alike. “Claire and I will provide two points of contact for people wanting to discuss these matters.”
