Broadlands Road to close temporarily

MEDIA RELEASE

21 December 2009

In mid-January 2010, Broadlands Road will be temporarily closed to allow contractors to complete road widening and re-alignment work as part of the East Taupo Arterial construction.

Broadlands Road - south of the Landfill entrance and east of Miro Street – will be closed to through traffic from 7am Monday 25 January 2010 - until 6pm of Wednesday 17 February 2010, with a detour in place via Centennial Drive and Tauhara Road during the closure.  Following this a single lane traffic control will be in place from 17 February to the 25 February.

The road closure will allow the road to be lifted to over half a metre in some areas giving a safer line of sight plus widening the road to allow for the two metre cycle lanes on each side of the road and dedicated turning bays for traffic to access the ETA. Kerb and channelling will also be installed.

“We know this will cause inconvenience to all Broadlands Road businesses, residents and road users” said Ron Boyle TDC Project Manager, “however the alternative was single traffic lane for the whole construction period which would mean up to eight weeks of major traffic delays. This way we have a shorter period of pain and a new road ready for the Bonita NZ Ironman being held on the 6 March.”

Broadlands Road traffic wishing to head south or access the Taupo CBD will need to use the detour route via Centennial Drive and Tauhara Road. North bound traffic heading to Rotorua via Broadlands Road will also need to use Centennial Drive.

Local residents and businesses situated within the road closure will have 24 hour access to their premises during the closure. The entrance to the Broadlands Road Transfer Station and Landfill will not be affected during the closure.
