Bikes, breakfast and backflipping BMXs

MEDIA RELEASE

17 February 2010

Approximately 155 cyclists peddled their way down to join the Mayor for the 2010 Mayoral Cycle Challenge and, despite wet weather, were treated to breakfast, spot prizes, and a BMX stunt show.

The annual Mayoral Challenge is a regular part of Bike Wise Month, and this year was held on ‘go-by-bike day’ to encourage people to cycle as a part of everyday transport.

The Mayor and a team of dedicated local cyclists, the large majority of which were school-aged children, rode their bikes from the Great Lake Centre around the Domain, past the boat harbour, and back in time for breakfast in the Civic Square.

Local BMX riders Jed Mildon and Billy Clerke entertained crowds while they ate with BMX stunts on a couple of quarter-pipe ramps, brought in especially for the event.

Mayor Rick Cooper says events like these are what make Taupo so special. “Taupo is an amazing place to live, and cycling is such a great way to get to and from work or school, or whatever. I encourage everyone out there to get on your bikes!”

The Mayor gave away spot prizes, including an Avanti Plus mountain bike, won by 7 year-old Oliver Hind from Waipahihi School. Oliver was ecstatic with his new bike, even if it was a little big for him just yet.

Road Safety Coordinator Christine Hutchison wishes to thank all those that participated in both the Mayoral Cycle Challenge, and family Fun night last week, and especially the sponsors for making Bike Wise month happen. “Bike Wise month is almost at an end, but the spotter will still be out giving out prizes to unsuspecting cyclists, so stay on your bikes.”
