Turangi and Southern Lakeshore Settlements Structure Plan

Page updated 10 December 2010

Options and Opportunities for Urban Growth

The first proposed options for urban growth at the southern lakeshore settlements of Lake Taupo are now available to the community for consultation.

These proposed urban growth options are focussed on Kuratau and Omori.  The options form part of the development of the Turangi and Southern Lakeshore Settlements Structure Plan and consider how to cater for growth in the area over the next 20 years.

The options have been developed from the huge number of responses from the community to the “Visions Values and Views” consultation exercise (early to mid 2010). Council has taken that feedback into account, along with technical reports, growth modelling activities and assessments that have been carried out.  It has been estimated that the southern end of the lake will need an additional 160 sections to meet demand over the next 20 years.

The options being proposed by council are:
• an extension of Omori in the area behind where the shop is located and
• a ‘mixed density’ residential zone on the land west of Kuratau.

Currently an economic assessment of Turangi is being carried out and further options specifically relating to the Turangi Town Centre, as part of the Structure Plan, will be available early in the New Year.
