Projects

Taupo District Council is working on some key projects over the next few years to manage growth and maintain a high standard of infrastructure and community services such as roading, sewerage, drinking water, and looking after our environment to ensure the Taupo district remains a great place to live for our residents.

East Taupo Arterial

The East Taupo Arterial is well under way, with construction expected to be complete by October this year.  The 16km highway will run along the eastern outskirts of Taupo (from Wairakei to Taupo Airport) and includes a bridge over the Waikato River.  More>>

Commercial and Industrial Structure Plan

Taupo District 2050 identified areas for future commerical and industrial growth in and around Taupo town.  To ensure that these areas are developed to meet the community's future needs, Council is developing the Taupo Commercial and Industrial Structure Plan and looking to help revitalise the town centre through the creation of a civic heart.  More>>

Mapara Valley Structure Plan

The Mapara Valley area was identified as an Urban growth area in the Taupo District 2050 Growth Management Strategy.  A structure plan and subsequent district plan change has been developed in consultation with the community that identifies the future landuse patterns for the structure plan area.  More>>

East Urban Lands

Over the past few years Council has been developing residential sections on 190 hectares on the south eastern outskirts of town.  An industry-leading urban design development comprising approximately 2,200 lots and known as the East Urban Lands (EUL) is currently going through the consent process.  More>>

Landscape and natural values

The Taupo district has some of the most amazing scenery and indigenous vegetation areas in New Zealand.  The purpose of the Taupo District Landscape and Natural Values Plan Change is to identify areas with important landscape and natural values, manage certain activities within these areas and establish incentives for landowners to undertake further protection and enhancement work.  More>>

Protecting Lake Taupo

Lake Taupo is one of New Zealand's national treasures.  However scientific evidence shows that its health is declining due to the amount of nitrogen reaching the lake from rural land, urban sources and septic tank seepage.  To just maintain the lake's current water quality, we need to reduce the amount of nitrogen reaching the lake by 20 per cent.  More>>

Transportation projects

Council provides an effective, efficient, sustainable and safe transportation network which allows people to move around easily and is essential for the economic and social wellbeing of the community.  Alternative modes of transport are encouraged through the provision of footpaths, cycle ways and passenger transport.  More >>

Wastewater

Council has developed a long term plan to progressively upgrade the wastewater reticulation network in Taupo to meet the increasing demand as our population grows.  More>>

Southern Structure Plan
The Southern Structure Plan will look at the existing and future land requirements for urban growth around Turangi, Motuoapa, Omori-Kuratau and Whareroa. It will develop a vision for future growth in these areas and how the settlements may look as they evolve, in collaboration with residents and ratepayers, local businesses and major landowners (including Maori Land Trusts, Trustees and hapu). Mangakino Service Centre Library

The Mangakino Service Centre is the key interface between the various operations of council and the residents and ratepayers of the Mangakino-Pouakani ward.  The redevelopment of the Mangakino Service Centre will provide for the integration of the Office and Library services and includes the Mangakino Community Agency.  More>>

Taupo Dog Pound and SPCA relocation

Taupo's existing SPCA building is in need of a major upgrade to provide a safe and sanitary environment for staff and animals.  The TDC Dog Pound and SPCA are moving to a new site with one multi-purpose building.  Council have been working closely with SPCA Taupo.  More>>
