['One Days Catch, Taupo.' The launch Tainui is pictured laden with trout gathered on a fishing excursion on Lake Taupo, c. 1915. Captain Darby (Thomas) Ryan is fifth from the left. For two decades he was owner and captain of the lake ferry, SS Tongariro, and released many trout into the lake. As well, Ryan was a businessman, tour operator and conservationist. This remarkable man was one of the original All Blacks and a pianist and painter of note. He remains one of Taupo's most colourful, talented and entrepreneurial characters.
