Storms

Storms and cyclones are a possibility in the Taupo district.
Different Types of Storms
Tropical Storms
These are also known as:
- cyclones (in the Indian Ocean and New Zealand)
- hurricanes (in the Atlantic)
- typhoons (in the Pacific)
Deep depressions (low pressure weather system) are sometimes brought on by tropical cyclones and result in heavy rainfall and gale force winds.
Tornados
These are narrow funnels of violently spinning air. They develop very quickly, often without warning, and last only for a few minutes and the path of destruction may be only 50 metres wide.
Storm Surges
These are created by a combination of:
- strong winds
- low atmospheric pressure
- exceptionally high tide
The combination of these three factors can cause the sea to rise up to 100 - 150 mm higher and drives the water inland.
