Industrial or chemical accidents

Civil Defence Emergency information for homes and workplaces

The Department of Labour, Occupational Safety and Health Division requires people to be aware of

  • hazards affecting workplaces
  • emergency procedures

All businesses should have emergency procedures to deal with chemicals and other hazards.

What to do in the event of a hazardous chemical emergency...

  • listen to the radio and TV for advice
  • do not evacuate unless told to. You may be safer where you are
  • if there are fumes, move away and upwind if possible
  • if you feel unwell or develop breathing difficulties visit your family doctor

If the hazard is OUTSIDE stay inside the building and immediately...

  • close all doors and windows
  • seal any gaps with towels or clothing
  • turn off air conditioning
  • wait for the "all clear"

If the hazard is INSIDE get out of the building...

  • calmly and quickly
  • move upwind if possible
  • stay out until officials tell you it's safe to return
